Does This Ad Make Me Look Gay?

This is a very interesting read about how some marketers are concerned about what happens when they market directly to gay consumers, does that make their brand "gay"? However, when you hear that the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender market is a $743 billion dollar market people may think differently... well that and when you realize that it's 2011! Give it a read here http://tinyurl.com/4x6zww2 and let me know what you think!

Apple or Microsoft

A group in Germany defaced an Apple store and put the Microsoft logo on it! They group did this in broad daylight! Gorilla Marketing or Vandelism? What are your thoughts? Check the video out here http://tinyurl.com/6gklrwk

Want new business?

Our clients are always looking at new ways to bring awareness of their business value and/or products to new customers. They hire us to think of out of the box ideas (and sometime in the box) to drive awareness and promote selection within their markets. So I love it when I see organic ideas like this one http://tinyurl.com/3pjrb7z pop up. The Greenwood-Phinney Chamber was working on a better way to market the neighborhood to bring customers into shops, restaurants and art galleries. So they are developing a website that is focused on promoting neighborhood businesses with a tag line "Do Phinneywood." In this day in age it's crucial for company's to be able to communicate who they are and why they matter in an effective and captivating way to their customers, online. It looks like the Greenwood-Phinney chamber gets that. Although the site is not live yet, I hope it will feature areas for people to post and make comments and potentially rate the businesses they frequent. At PBDH we've developed many organic sites (similar to what this one will hopefully be) that rely on realtime dynamic content from users/customers to promote the business they patron. It's paid off for our clients as I hope it will for this fabulous neighborhood!

A New Site!

Check out PRCN's new look and refreshed website! Looks great, and a wonderful example of a growing organization that is keeping their website just as fresh as their brand! Congrats PRCN and great job PBDH team!

Live Intentionally

Here is a little Thursday motivation from the Daily Motivator! Have a great Thursday!!!

If you want to live richly, live intentionally. Choose what you wish to
create, and then experience the immense satisfaction of making it so.

Instead of being consumed with doubts and fears about what might happen, be
focused on what you will cause to happen.
Listen to your heart, and take the initiatives that most closely resonate
with what you hear.

Absolutely accept and embrace whatever randomness life brings your way. Yet
do it from a perspective of your own choosing.

Get the very most from each day by making the intentional choice of how to
spend it. Instead of being pushed in a hundred different directions by the
conflict and complexity that surrounds you, harness the energy of your
passion and purpose.

Direct yourself, consistently and persistently, toward the places,
situations, experiences, people and results that you wish to have in your
life. You have more than enough energy, opportunities and ability, when
focused in a specific direction, to achieve whatever you choose.

So choose to choose. Decide how your life will be, this hour, this day, this
year, this century, and live the true richness of making it happen.

Ok, now this is a hilarious example of an ad that might not make sense but it's definitely creating positive buzz around tourism for Leavenworth, WA. There is not much to say but STELLAR job and...gitcha, gitcha, GITCHA GOOMSBA UP!

Groupon's Flop

I consider myself a "pretend" football fan. I say this as I really only get into the game if the Seahawks are doing REALLY well or if there is an excuse to eat massive amounts of terrible food and consume some beer (or in my case wine). So you won't be surprised when I tell you that I was more interested in the commercials during the Super Bowl game than the game itself. The funny thing is that my reaction to some of the commercials mimicked those of the "real fans" when the Steelers kept throwing the ball away...OH MY GOD! These words kept flying out of my mouth during Groupon's commercial's comparing Brazilian bikini waxing to the deforestation of the Brazilian rain forests or Tibetan freedom to amazing half price Tibetan food in the U.S.. Now I know that one of the many points of advertising is to create a reaction in your consumer and get them to remember your brand. However, another key to advertising is to map your creative objectives back to your original business goals, keeping your creative output on message. But when you manage to offend human rights supporters, environmentalist and Tibetan freedom in three short ad's, I would say your creative process was broken, your message was lost, and now you face some serious clean up work! All of which could have been prevented if you had a solid process in place, mapping your creative concepts back to the original business goals of the campaign. Sadly Groupon is not alone in this flopped campaign. This is all too common in our industry and that's why it is so important for companies to always make sure their marketing and advertising agency has a clear process and working model to avoid ending up in this situation.

CauseWired has a great article that speaks to the flopped campaign ever further. Check it out here: http://tinyurl.com/622bwjw

The Three Threats To Creativity

The Harvard Business Review blog just posted the following article http://tinyurl.com/2u7t6bo discussing how creativity is under threat when the economy is squeezed! This makes me thankful that I work in an environment that thrives on smart creative people (no matter what the economy looks like) who are passionate about our clients success and are always looking for new ways to express their creativity in the work place. Check out what some of our designers did to one of our conference rooms when they needed a creative outlet:

I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by people who love what they do and that we can create an environment at PBDH that fosters creativity and in the end allows us to produce great work for our clients! If you need more of a creative environment, ping me or if you are looking for a new creative marketing and interactive design team that remains CREATIVE despite the economy, PING ME!

ETF's are To BLAME!

I ran across this really interesting article posted on the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation's (GO KC) website. It's a new report that says that derivatives known as ETF's are what is causing market distortions and choking recovery and keeping new and existing business from growing. It blames ETF's for artificially setting stock prices which in turns creates threats to market stability. Give it a read, you'll find it interesting, I promise! http://tinyurl.com/29e7nty

Seattle from a Brit's Point of View

I love reading articles about Seattle from a perspective outside the U.S. The following article sum's this place up pretty nicely in my opinion.

Cheap Tickets

As the holidays are approaching I am confronted with the ongoing battle of HIGH airline prices to get home to see my family. One would think after 11 years in Seattle I would have a pretty good idea of when I am going home for Christmas and Thanksgiving, resulting in me booking tickets WELL in advance. Not the case. I seem to perpetually book Thanksgiving in October and Christmas in November. As a result I basically spend the same on two tickets to the breadbasket of America (Kansas City) as I would on a ticket to Greece. Sad. Anyways, here is a good article for others to learn from my mistakes and learn how to navigate the crazy prices to fly in the sky: http://tinyurl.com/25cuk2u

Urban Legend? I think Not!

WOW! Someone really does live atop the smith tower! I've heard about a million different stories in the 11 years I have lived in Seattle about the resident on top of this tower. Now all rumors are set aside. Check out this FABULOUS space, http://tinyurl.com/262ydej

Starbucks = Free Movies and Ebooks...Whaaa?

I love how our local celebrity, Starbucks, is continuing to evolve itself. Just this week they opened a new concept store that serves lunch dinner and booze! But now as you're sipping your coffee with a little Irish Baileys Cream you can also read a literary novel or catch up on the latest Hollywood gossip through their digital network! Starting on Wednesday the coffee chain is going to offer customers free access to e-books, movies, and other entertainment sites in all their stores! This new evolution in the Starbucks brand just confirms, for me, that they know how to adapt and stay relevant in a tough market!

Pay More To Be Greener?

Amazon was just granted a patent for "environmentally conscious electronic transactions," which essentially gives customers a shipping option which is slower and more expensive BUT it's greener. Curious as to what others out there think. Would you pay more to get your shipment at a slower rate just to be green?
