Mayor's Arts Awards Ceremony
Great event under sunny skies the day before Labor Day Weekend. I just attended the Mayor's Arts Awards ceremony at the Seattle Center. There were close to 500 entries this year. The winners are:
Juan Alonso, Visual Artist
Book-it Repertory Theatre
Dennis Coleman, Artistic Director, Seattle Men's Chorus and Seattle Women's Chorus
Reel Grrls
Sergei Tschernisch, President, Cornish College of the Arts
Velocity Dance Center
It was also the official opening of the Bumbershoot Visual Arts Exhibits:
Counterculture Comix: A 30-year survey of Seattle alternative cartoonists, curated by Larry Reid in association with Fantagraphics Books
The Bumbershoot Piece, 2010: site-specific installation by Jonathan Brilliant
Sounds Human: curated by Lele Barnett and Kathy Lindenmayer
Portrait Challenge: curated by Ryan Molenkamp
Seattle Street Biennale 2010: curated by NKO
This marks the beginning of Bumbershoot. Now there's three days of Music and Art... the biggest arts festival in America. As a One Reel Board Member (One Reel produces Bumbershoot) I am so proud of the incredible effort the staff has put into this event. It is an honor to serve this non-profit group. Bumbershoot is now celebrating it's 40th anniversary. It hasn't always been easy (like last year, when it rained 3 days solid and lots of people stayed home) but this year it's full steam ahead.
I'm hoping to get over there to see Bob Dylan tomorrow nite. Leslie and I are going Monday to see Mary J. Blige, among other acts. Hopefully we'll see you there!
